MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 16th July, 2008 (17-Jul-08)
Vegetables
Round shallots and Banana shallots are both continuing to fall in price and the quality is also starting to vastly improve.
English Courgettes, Broccoli and Cauliflower are excellent value for money. Both are inexpensive and high quality.
We should now start to see a decrease in price on Jackets, Mids and Potatoes in general as the new crop are now pushing the old crop out of the way.
We have moved over to new crop Spanish Onions but please be aware the skins have not set yet so they don’t have such a long shelf life as normal but the price is very good.
Jerusalem Artichokes are once again available but are very expensive.
New crop English Swede and Parsnips are looking excellent.
The demand for Yellow Courgettes has also crept up over the last few weeks.
New crop French Sweetcorn is looking and tasting superb and it won’t be long before it is replaced by English.
English Rhubarb is still available.
Summer Spring Green is superb and is outselling most other veg.
We are currently using Cypriot Cara Potatoes to replace our normal King Edwards and they are cooking up superb.
English Bobby Beans and Chantenay Carrots are once again back in market and available and our Egyptian Red Onions are unmatched in quality.
New crop English Stick Bean price is still quite high unfortunately.
Salads
All salad items are looking very good again this week.
We have swapped over to Belgian Lollo Rosso and Oak Leaf as the quality of the local English is not up to our standards.
We have now switched over to English ice packed Watercress and away from the French as the quality was quite poor but English Water Cress typically has its problems at this time of year but we will Endeavour to keep on top of any issues we have.
English Iceberg Lettuce is due to start creeping up in price. This is normal due to the typically high demand for it at this point in the year.
All mixed Baby Leaves like Red Mustard, Mizuna, Pousse and Rockette etc are all coming through very good quality.
Also to order only (with 24 hours notice): Micro Herbs
They have become very popular over the last month or two and are a new item. They are defiantly worth a try.
Endive has problems this time of year and we do tend to have the odd complication so please be aware of this when ordering.
Fruit
Greengages have now started, they are little hard and sharp still but they are definately available.
Apricots are excellent.
Hass Avocados are also excellent.
Canteloupe and Charentais: The cheaper varieties are cutting very pale and dry at the moment. We have had to move over to the very best of the French produce. It is more expensive but the quality in comparison is unquestionable.
Red Currants, White Currants and Black Currants are all readily available.
White Flesh French Peaches are now available. They are still a little expensive but they taste so much better than the yellow flesh.
English Cherries are absolutely beautiful this year, don’t forget to order some.
Exotics
Lychee are once again back in market and available.
Don’t forget we do tinned truffles and truffle oil.
Girolle Mushroom is very popular at the moment and has a very good colour and texture.
