MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 2nd July, 2008 (03-Jul-08)
Veg:
Cauliflowers remain good quality and we are now coming down in price.
Broccoli remains much the same but we have got small quantities coming in from a local supplier approximately 3-4 times per week it is very good quality and also coming down in price.
English marrows are now with us and so are English courgettes. We should be on both of them by the end of this week.
New season English swede started this week.
It will not be long till we also see the start of new season English parsnips.
We will be ending English Asparagus by the end of the week and moving onto Peruvian or Chilean.
Fresh Sweetcorn from France has now started and will soon be followed by English. It is a little later this year than normal.
English new season Carrots have started and they are a little on the small size as soon as they start to get a little larger we will swap over and start to use them.
Butternut Squash has become very hard to find, especially anything with the quality we require and the size we like. As a result it is a little more expensive than normal.
New season English Savoy has now started, it is a little on the small side and has quite a short shelf life at this stage.
New season Spanish Onions have also started to arrive and should begin to replace the Chilean shortly.
All forms of Spinach (Pousse etc included) are a little problematic still due to the weather.
Salads:
Tomatoes are on starting to go up in price but we’re not expecting anything major.
English Iceberg and Little Gem are excellent at the moment as is the cos.
English Spring Onions are also very good and the Celery is getting better each week.
Land Cress and Micro Herbs have become very popular over the last few weeks. They are however for pre-order and by the box only. 24 hours notice please.
We now have a new supplier for our local English Rockette and it’s superb.
Plum Vine Tomato sales are up and have become quite popular as have Mini Cucumbers from Holland.
We will also be switching over to local English Raddichio shortly too.
Fruit:
The season has started with all the English fruits such as Berries and Cherries especially.
We have now switched to English Raspberries and Cherries and they both eat superbly.
No real change in Grapes, they are much the same as last week.
All the Melons are much better now and are eating very well.
Blackcurrants and White Currants from Holland have now started. The Redcurrants are also excellent at the moment.
Flat Peach are beginning to sell very well but are still very hit and miss on availability unfortunately.
Lemons and Oranges still remain quite tight and the prices are still holding up. Unfortunately it is also the same story with Pink Grapefruit.
Exotics:
All our baby veg is still local and is very good.
Baby Courgettes have become very popular as have both Yellow and Green Baby Patti Pan Squash.
Wild Inca Tomatoes and Yams have become quite popular recently.
PRICE ALERT: Potatoes (Especially Jackets Potatoes) are not looking at their best and the price will continue to rise as there is a big shortage in old crop Potatoes. We have started new English Mids which are excellent. Our supplier has pre-warned us that we may have to switch over to Cypriot Bakers soon which will only push the price up even more.
