MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 18th June, 2008 (19-Jun-08)
Veg:
It’s all happening again with prices being all over the place.
Broccoli and Cauliflower are the main problem areas.
Summer Cauliflowers are very small and are in very short supply so we’ve switched over to German for the moment.
Iced English Broccoli has also gone very short due to the weather and due to a strike in Spain nothing is coming through from there either, this is not supporting the current demand for Broccoli so its very, very short.
Courgettes have taken a jump in price too as they have also gone very short but English will start shortly though typically they are not at their best when they start.
English Peas and Broad Beans are still very good and shouldn’t be overlooked.
This maybe our last week with English Asparagus for the season and we will be moving back over to foreign produce.
English new crop Turnips are looking very nice and are selling well.
Banana Shallots, Round Shallots and Button Onions remain almost extinct and at the highest prices we have ever known.
Old Potatoes are extremely hard to find and it’s possible we may run out this year.
Cyprus Potatoes remain very good but are a tad on the expensive side.
It won’t be long before we finish with French Carrots and move onto new crop English produce.
New season bunch Carrots and Bunch Beetroot are exceptional.
Spinach has been hit very hard the last couple of weeks, we’ve had no local available and the foreign produce is the same. It’s very difficult to find anything that is good quality. Pousse and pre-packed Spinach is also suffering from the same problems.
Salads:
This week not so many problems as we’ve not had as much rain.
Iceberg, Little Gem and Cos Lettuce has all picked up a little since last week.
Cucumbers, Tomatoes etc have had no real changes.
English Celery is looking much better on a daily basis now but it is still holding its value and is quite expensive still.
We have also had to give local lollo Rosso and Bionda a miss recently due to weather damage. We’ve had to move over to Belgian until more is available.
Fruit:
Italian Cherries are superb.
English Cherries are approx 2 weeks away, some small samples have made their way into market but they are very small.
The English Gooseberries’ season will only last around 4-5 weeks this year due to the weather problems we have had.
Our local Suffolk Strawberries seem to taste better every time we get a delivery. They really are the best available.
Peach and Nectarines are all good quality now.
Plums are still suffering a little and it can be hard to find ripe fruit.
Seedless Grapes are still ok but you need to keep a close eye on it this time of year as its not always at its best.
Melons especially Galia’s are causing problems this year again. Samples are coming though looking very tired and scruffy.
Honeydew seems to have gone very short recently but we believe this is more down to transport issues and strikes.
Exotics:
Air freight Mangoes are superb.
Fresh Figs and Dragon Fruit are also superb.
Sharon Fruit is now available.
We can also get boxes of Mixed Baby Micro Leaves but we are only selling this by the box.
We can get the following but only for pre-order and it may take up to 48 hours to get:
Land Cress
Red Amaranth Cress
Golden Shimiji Mush
