MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 21st May, 2008 (22-May-08)
Vegetables:
 
New crop French Carrots has now replaced the English winter crop.
New season French Leeks are due to start. 
Winter crop Cauliflowers are now starting to suffer and look a little yellow as we wait for the summer crop to start.
Young & Tender English Hispi and Primo is now available.
English Norfolk Asparagus is very good and is eating very.
Fresh Peas and Broad Beans are readily available but Peas are still high in price.
Flat Beans are also available and often overlooked.
All the main crop of Potatoes are starting to show signs of their age as we draw towards the end of the season though Cyprus Potatoes are looking excellent and have become a popular choice
Both Red and White Cabbage still remain high in price.
Banana and Round Shallots are extremely short and expensive.
Chantennay Carrots are finished for what is expected to be approx 4 weeks until the new crop starts.
 
Salad:
 
English Iceberg has now started and we be switching as soon as possible.
LOCAL Cos and Little Gem is looking good at the moment.
We are now on LOCAL Lollo Rosso, Bionda and Oak Leaf.
Mixed Baby Leaf etc is still coming in very good.
Celery is still very short as we are still waiting on the new crop English to start.
 
Fruit:
 
Chilean and New Zealand Kiwi have now started.
Peaches, Nectarines & Apricots are improving all the time.
New crop Spanish Honeydew and Galia Melons have now started.
Belgian Strawberries are looking and tasting very good.
White Seedless Grape is quite problematic at the moment and it’s difficult to find anything good.
Black Seedless however is still very good.
Oranges and Lemons still remain in very short supply and hard to find while keeping a high price.
 
 
Exotics:
 
Our selection of LOCAL Baby vegetables are now being picked for us daily.
Blueberries, Blackberries and Redcurrants are all very good as they are all new crop.
Baby Courgettes are still very short so please pre-order them when you need them if possible.
