MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 30th April, 2008 (01-May-08)
Veg:
Cornish New Potatoes have now started.
English “Strawed” Carrots have started to rise in price as the season closes, new crop from Italy or France will arrive shortly.
All Potatoes including prep products will start to rise in price as the cold store stock starts to run out, this will especially affect the price of Baking Potatoes.
New crop Italian Savoy Cabbage has now started.
New season English pointed Cabbage will replace the tired winter crop.
Parsnips are now coming from Scotland which has forced the price up.
English Leek season is almost over and will be replaced by new season French.
Cauliflower and Broccoli price is very unstable at the moment.
White Cabbage is still making a premium price.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli season is almost over.
Kale is now finished as it’s very woody and starting to flower.
Salad:
The end of the Spanish and canary salad season is allowing the Dutch to dominate the market and demand premium prices for all salad products.
As supply of Spanish Iceberg shortens it has almost doubled in value in the last 2 weeks.
Lollo rosso, oak and endive will also be going up in price as we switch our produce from the south of France to the north and the lettuce can sometimes be a little smaller for a short period of time.
Yellow cherry tomatoes are still quite short.
Fruit:
Peach and Nectarines are available now, but they are coming in small and under ripe.
Dutch Strawberries are very temperamental with price at the moment but the quality is unmatched.
Spanish Galia Melons have started but they are arriving at the market over ripe and poor quality.
Brazilian Honeydew Melon season is ending; we are waiting for the Spanish new crop to start. This can cause a few problems with size and ripeness when they first start.
Chilean Quinces have started.
Gold Flesh Pineapples are very good at the moment.
Italian Kiwi fruit is still at a premium price.
New Zealand Cox’s are eating very well.
New season Spanish Watermelons are now entering the market.
Exotics:
No real changes, Blackberries and Redcurrants still remain very expensive and in short supply.
Raspberries are following suit, the price seems to be going up on a daily basis.
