MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 16th April, 2008 (16-Apr-08)
Veg:
 
Cauliflowers are much shorter this week and price has risen quite steeply.
Broccoli is also expected to rise as the Spanish supplies start to slow down.
End of season English Cabbage are still available but the quality is suffering.
Portuguese Cabbage has become very short and expensive due to heavy rain.
White Cabbage is still expensive but this is normal for this time of year.
English Carrots are still showing excellent quality.
Local Leek’s are coming through very nice.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Kale are still available but both are coming to an end.
Jersey Mids and Ware potatoes are continuing to drop in price.
Red Onions are a little problematic and are showing a shorter shelf life than normal.
Italian Asparagus is in the market but not delivered on a daily basis.
English Asparagus is available as we start to get into the season as long weather stays mild.
Broad Beans are starting to become more available and are looking very nice.
 
Salads:
 
Peppers have risen in price as the Spanish season comes to an end.
Hopefully by the end of this week we will have replaced our Canary Tomatoes with new season Dutch.
Little Gem and Iceberg Lettuce from Spain are due to rise in price as produce shortens.
Lollo Rosso, Raddichio, Oak etc is all coming through very nice but has risen a little in price.
English Spring Onions now available.
Wild Garlic is also still readily available.
Italian Rockette is superb.
 
Fruit:
 
Oranges and Lemons are again very expensive.
Melons are still not at their best as we are waiting for new season Spanish to start.
Meddlers have now started and again not on a daily basis.
White and Black seedless Grapes are both starting to suffer with quality issues.
Peach and Nectarines are still available, but they are not at their best so beware.
Italian Kiwi fruit is up in price but is very good quality.
New Zealand Cox’s Apples are now with us.
Chilean Granny Smiths are now in stock.
Argentinean Red Apples will replace the French by week end.
Chilean Royal Gala Apples have now started.
Bramley Apples are up in price again and some samples are showing signs of bitter pip.
English Rhubarb has been affected by the cold weather and has risen slightly in price.
 
Exotics:
 
Air-freight Avocados and Mangoes are still excellent quality but still a little expensive.
We have now swapped over to Belgian Strawberries, the price is very high but the quality is excellent!
Dragon Fruit is very good this time of year.
Sharon Fruit is also available.
Green Almonds are due to start anytime now, by the box only. Please order a day in advance.
