MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 2nd April, 2008 (02-Apr-08)
Veg:
 
English Cauliflowers have suffered in the last burst of cold weather which has forced the price upwards. .
As a result of the cauliflower price it has affected the Broccoli price as well.
Local Leeks seem to be a little shorter.
English Savoy is coming through very well.
White Cabbage price has taken its usual rise at this time of the year.  
Portuguese Hispi Cabbage is excellent quality.
We have switched over to Chilean Onions to replace the Spanish, while they are more expensive the quality is excellent.
Courgettes are stable in price.
Globe Artichokes are coming through very nice.
Spinach still remains high in price but is also very nice.
English Carrots are coming through very good quality.
Chantennay Carrots are selling very well and are a popular choice.
We are now able to source Spanish Marrows.
Egyptian, Cyprus and Majorcan Potatoes are now available.
Jersey Ware and Mids are arriving on a daily basis but are still demanding a premium price.
Root crop Vegatables are still proving a popular choice and are all reasonable priced.
 
Salad:
 
We are now using Dutch Peppers and as normal the price is very high but it will drop shortly.
This is the same for Aubergines.
Spanish Celery has started to become a little problematic and is suffering from hollow stalks.
Iceberg Lettuce is due to rise in price.
Little Gem has become a little shorter, we have had a little English recently but it has stopped again.
Chinese Leaf is high in price and small in size.
Lollo Rosso, Endive, oak etc is all coming through very well.
Water Cress seems to have held up well and is still coming through good quality.
 
Fruit:
 
Black and White Grapes are both suffering in quality.
Spanish Strawberries are very hit and miss and it won’t be long until we switch over to the Dutch or Belgian.
Carmel Galia melons have started and are excellent quality.
Oranges remain much the same.
Satsuma’s have started from Argentina and are normally a little sharp.
Cape Plums are still coming through very good still, but they are coming towards the end of their season.
Bananas have remained the same.
Lemons remain very short and price is still very high.
Watermelon is still coming through well.
We’re currently trying Moroccan Cantaloupe Melons; they look and taste excellent but are a little expensive.
English Rhubarb is coming through very good and the price is starting to drop.
 
Exotics:
 
Blackberries, Redcurrants and Blueberries still remain very high in price.
The very first of the English Asparagus has been sighted! This is not readily available and is extremely expensive.
Air freight Mangoes are coming through excellent.
Small numbers of new crop Israeli Lychee are available but the fruit is still small.
Avocados have gone even shorter and harder to find as Israeli fruit has finished very early and we’re now waiting on sea freight South African, Possibly another 4 weeks or so.
