MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 26th March, 2008 (26-Mar-08)
Veg
Cauliflowers are showing excellent size and quality.
English Savoy and Cornish Spring Green are in stock.
Fresh Peas and Broad Beans are in the markets.
Italian box Red Onions are excellent quality but more expensive than other varieties available.
Courgettes are still making more money than usual.
Majorcan and Egyptian Potatoes have now started.
All root crops are stable in price and quality.
Sprouts are now finished
Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Curly Kale are the veggies choice of the week.
Fruit
Bananas still high in price.
Lemons are still very short and very expensive, and the price is still rising.
Good quality Oranges and Melons are becoming hard to source which is affecting the price.
French Apples are starting to show end of season quality, we are waiting for new season Cape and Chilean to start.
Black and White Grapes are good quality.
Ugly fruit are still around but it can be a short season.
English Rhubarb is the Fruit family’s choice of the week.
Salad
New season Dutch Peppers have started although more expensive the quality is excellent.
Dutch Salad Tomatoes should be with us by weekend.
Good quality Iceberg Lettuce is high in price.
Celery is still coming through good quality
Mix Baby Leafs, Pousse and Ruby Chard are the Salad family’s choice of the week.
Due to the time of year you may find that our fancy Lettuces may contain small pine cones. They can be washed out easily and the lettuces are fine to use. This will only continue until we start the English season which will be in about a month’s time.
Exotics
Red Currents are high in price.
Asparagus is still making money.
Kumquats are selling well.
Paw Paw has a short shelf life this time of year.
Lychees have now finished
Physalis is the Exotic family’s choice of the week.
