MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 19th March, 2008 (25-Mar-08)
Vegetables:
Broccoli and Cauliflowers are both due to rise in price shortly.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli is very good quality and proving very popular.
Romanesque is almost finished for this season and has become very limited in availability and expensive.
Local Leeks are still very good.
Courgettes are very good quality but are a little high in price.
Spinach is very good and very popular.
Portuguese Hispi Cabbage is exceptional as are Chantennay Carrots.
Marrows are now available.
Spanish onions have risen in price slightly as they are now coming out of cold storage.
Asparagus is still very good quality.
English Yorkshire Rhubarb has entered the market but like always demanding a premium price.
Salad:
Tomatoes are just as difficult as last week with both Spanish and Canary becoming soft and off colour. But the first of the Dutch Tomatoes arrive this week.
Peppers are rising in price as we switch from Spanish to Dutch.
English Little Gem has now started and showing some superb quality.
It is still proving difficult to find good quality Spring Onions.
We have had to move over to loose Baby Leaf as the Italian pre-packed is showing a dip in quality.
Fruit:
Again, not much change.
Strawberries are making a little more money but are still good quality.
Oranges are still highly priced and are still vastly overshadowed by the price and availability of lemons.
Bananas are still all over the place with both price and quality.
Plums are excellent at the moment very ripe and sweet.
Blood Oranges are still coming through very strong.
Melons are still a problem when it comes to getting anything ripe.
Exotics:
Red Currants still remain expensive.
Raspberries are still going up in price.
Airfreight Avocados and Mangoes are excellent quality but highly priced.
Paw Paw is problematic this time of year as much of it is going soft before it becomes ripe.
Fresh Figs are still popular and a good choice.
