MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 27th February, 2008 (27-Feb-08)

Vegetables:

Romanesque has now become very short and hard to source as they lost most of the later part of their crop in Spain.

English Savoy and Primo Cabbage are all coming to the end of their season and we will soon be switching over to French, Italian and Portuguese so price will be sporadic.

Cauliflowers are currently being swapped back and forth between local and French so we can keep up with quality expectations.

Spanish Onion price looks due to rise shortly purely due to the time of year.

English root crop vegetables are all still reasonably priced.

Courgettes have been showing great quality and are very affordable.

Celeriac, Chantennay Carrots and new crop Hispi cabbage are selling very well.

Curley Kale and Purple Sprouting Broccoli are proving a very popular choice.

Spanish Marrows are now readily available although they are a little on the small side.

For something a little different, Moroccan Peas and Broad beans have now started to show in the markets.

Salads:

Tomatoes have started to show a little end of season quality, we will be switching over to Dutch Tomatoes as soon as available.

Peppers, Aubergines and the entire Tomato family will be switched to new season Dutch as soon as available. This may force you to see a few short term price hikes.

Spanish Celery is still very good and reasonably priced.

Freshly cooked Beetroot is also another good choice.

All lettuces are showing great quality and size this week.

Fruit:

We will soon be saying goodbye for another year to the English Bramleys and Cox’s.

Large Oranges, Pineapples, Melons and Bananas still remain in short supply.

Good quality White and Black Grapes are proving a little more difficult to find.

Blood Oranges still remain available and are still quite popular.

Peaches and Nectarines are finished now and best avoided.

Exotics:

Ugly Fruit are available in small quantities.

Yellow Courgettes are in very short supply.

Fresh Figs, Passion Fruit and Kumquats have become a popular choice over the last week.
