MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 20th February, 2008 (21-Feb-08)
Veg:
Local Primo,
Purple Sprouting is coming through very well and is reasonable priced.
Local Leeks are still good quality and Celeriac has become the in vegetable. Pac choi and Spring Greens are also selling very well.
Fennel,
Butternut Squash is selling very well, though a little more expensive than normal.
Pre-packed South African Runner Beans are very good quality along with “Flat” Beans.
Courgettes seem to have become more stable in price and the quality has improved.
For something a little different why not try our Pre-packed South African Runner Beans or our Flat Beans from
Salad:
We are experiencing a few quality issues with the Tomato family at the moment as the Spanish season ends; we will be moving on to new season Dutch as soon as available.
Red and White Chicory are still a firm favourite.
Mixed Sakura, Shisso and Affila Cress are all very good quality.
Little Gem and Cos Lettuce are proving to be the pick of the Lettuce family.
For something a little different why not try Baby Plum vine tomatoes or mini cucumbers, both are a little on the expensive side and are only sold by the box.
Fruit:
Spanish Strawberries and Raspberries are in good supply now.
Kiwi Fruit and Pink Florida Grapefruit are exceptional.
Spanish Oranges are slowly being replaced with Moroccan.
Honeydew Melons are in short supply which is forcing the price upwards.
Fresh Cherries are still available but the season will end shortly.
Bananas and large pineapples still remain in short supply and expensive.
Exotics:
South African Baby Vegetables are very good.
Blueberries, fresh figs, Kumquats and Passion fruit are a very good choice.
Star Fruit has become much more available over the last week as the Chinese new year has finished.
The “ready to eat” Mangoes and Hass Avocados are both superb in quality and flavour.
