MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 6th February, 2008 (07-Feb-08)
Veg:
English Cauliflowers are coming to an end and will be switching over to French or Spanish towards the end of the week.
Swede could rise in price shortly due to a lot of the current crop having rot in the middle.
Curley Kale and Romanesque are still available. Spring Green and Portuguese Hispi are still looking very good.
Spinach is still quite short and quite high in price.
It is likely that we could see a rise in Potato prices due to the shortage of good quality product coming out of storage.
Salads:
All salad prices remain stable.
Fruit:
Good quality Honeydew Melons have become a little harder to find. Please be aware Charantais and Galia Melons take much longer to ripen this time of year.
Avocados have become problematic as they typically come into the country either much too ripe or far too under ripe. We have switched to airfreight Avocados when available but they tend to be more expensive.
Spanish Strawberries are now available and the quality and price is stable.
Yellow Plums, Moroccan Oranges and Blood Oranges are also available now.
Black Seedless Grapes still remain in short supply and highly priced. We should see a price drop in Bananas shortly as the fruit becomes readily available.
Exotics:
Redcurrants and Blackberries still remain very expensive due to limited availability.
Fine Beans, Mange-Tout and Sugar Snaps have remained stable.
Lychee’s are still plentiful.
Air freight Star Fruit still remain exceptionally short and very difficult to source.
There was a small sign of New Zealand Apricots in the market, but these are very expensive and only have a short season spanning approx 2 weeks.
Peaches and Nectarines are available in small quantities but will be finishing shortly.
Pomegranates are large and exceptionally good quality.
