MARKET REPORT - Thursday 17th January, 2008 (21-Jan-08)
Veg:
Local Leeks, Sprout Tops, local Cauliflowers and Savoy Cabbage are still good quality.
Purple Sprouting broccoli and Spanish broccoli is also very good and reasonably priced.
Celeriac, Turnips, Parsnips and Brussel Sprouts are very popular at the moment and good in quality.
Pre-packed South African runner beans are also available for something a little different.
Direct supply of Norfolk Carrots are coming in very good.
Portuguese Hispi Cabbage is now available but is in short supply and highly priced. Shallots and Fennel are still good, but high in price too.
Bunch Carrots are still available.
Please be aware good quality Potatoes, could rise in price, as quality becomes harder to find.
Salads:
Tomato prices seem to be stable now.
Iceburg Lettuce has fallen in price and quality still remains good, however Round Lettuce is very short and expensive. All other Lettuces remain expensive and tend to come in smaller this time of year.
Sweet “Romano” Peppers are very good and are coming in from
Fresh cooked Beetroot is another popular choice at the moment.
Spanish Celery is also coming in very good.
Fruit:
All Fruit is generally a problem this time of year.
Apple prices typically rise along with both Black and White Grapes. Kiwi Fruit is also making a premium price.
Melons and Avocados prove harder to find, especially ripe ones.
Seville Oranges are in season at the moment but please remember it is a very short season and the price will be a lot higher compared to last year, due to crop faillier.
Watermelons are still coming in very good, but are a little high in price.
English Russets have come to an end and will shortly be followed by English Comice Pears.
Good quality Strawberries are proving harder to find, but we are sourcing the best quality available to us for this time of year.
Unfortunately lemons are going to remain high due to a more crop failure.
Exotic:
Fresh figs are good quality and reasonably priced.
Baby veg is coming in very good and is all readily available.
This is a good time of year for lychees as they are plentiful and also affordable.
Tamarillo, Prickly pears and Grenadillo’s are also available this time of year.
