MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 31st October 2007 (31-Oct-07)

Veg:

Cauliflowers have risen in price but remain excellent quality. We have now moved onto Spanish Broccoli and Courgettes are due to change over to Moroccan in the near future. Both Sprouts and Sprout Tops are coming in very good, and the Dutch Red Onion is also very good. Kale is still available and very good.

Purple Sprouting is very short and expensive and we're only able to get small quantities at a time and it's not guaranteed to be available every day.

Local Primo Cabbage and Savoy Cabbage are first class quality and excellent value. King Edward Potatoes are exceptional quality and great all round cooking potatoes. Butternut Squash, Button Onions, and both Round and Banana Shallots are all selling very well at the moment. Spring Green is at its best this time of year.

Rhubarb is very expensive at the moment due to the first of the Dutch 'force grown'.

Local Spinach is still holding well, and Fennel is starting to rise in price.

Salads:

We're now on all French fancy Lettuce but the price is very unstable and likely to change. Lambs Leaf is also very good at the moment too.

Tomatoes have been relatively steady recently; however there will be changes in both price and quality as we are switching over to the Spanish and Canary Produce. English Spring Onions will also finish soon and we will start using the larger Egyptian type.

Red Chicory is very short and expensive.

French Watercress is still very favourable.

Local Celery is coming in very good still, and French Watercress is very nice.

Mixed 'crunchy' shoots and Alfalfa Sprouts are available at the moment.

Mixed Cress, Affilia Cress and Rock Chives are selling well at the moment and Tofu is also selling well at the moment, and seems to be quite popular.

Sweet 'Romano' Peppers and Jalapeno Peppers are also starting to sell now.

Fruit:

There has not really been much of a change again this week - All Apples and Oranges are much the same as last week, Lemons are still short and expensive and Black Brazilian Grapes have started to rise in price due to shortages.

Exotics:

Fresh Figs are very short and we've not been able to get any for a few days now and Black Turkish Figs have finished. Carmel Israeli Figs are now available but are in short supply as they do not arrive on a daily basis.

We're currently waiting on the arrival of Brazilian 'dusted' Figs.

All Local Baby Veg has now finished and we have moved on to South African and French produce.

Cooked Chestnuts are beginning to sell very well, and the Mixed Dried Wild Mushroom is a favourite this time of year and sells well along side of the Fresh.

Blue berries are still short and expensive.

And finally, don't forget that we also sell White and Red Vinegar and Balsamic Vinegar.
