MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 17th October, 2007 (18-Oct-07)
VEGETABLES
This week we have local Pumpkins and Local Mixed Squash in stock and they are looking good. We can also now source Gourds from the London Markets.
Swede, Parsnips and Turnips are all looking excellent at the moment, and Local Leeks are still going strong.
Fresh Sweetcorn is still available, although it will be coming to an end very shortly.
Sprouts and Sprout Tops are now readily available on a day to day basis, however, these are weather dependant. And Kohl Rabi is also available at the moment.
Bunch Carrots are still good and readily available, and Chantannay Carrots are very good at this time of year.
Broccoli and Cauliflower are excellent and are reasonably priced too, as are the Savoy Cabbage and Spring Greens.
Local Spinach is still available and is selling very well. Isreali Sweet Potatoes are very good at the moment.
Courgettes are due to go through a change over period shortly and the Spanish will start to improve in quality.
Rhubarb still remains very expensive.
FRUIT
Peaches and Nectarines have now finished, they are still in
Sharon Fruit and Khaki are now readily available.
Melons are also looking good at the moment but please keep in mind that they do take longer to ripen at this time of year, so please order in advance.
All English Apples are now starting to look very good, especially Russet's and Cox's.
There have currently been some problems with Fresh Figs, and have become quite short and expensive. The Turkish and Spanish season has just started which makes things a little difficult at the time being.
Strawberries and Raspberries are proving difficult at the moment but this is normal for this time of year.
Satsumas are now looking good, and Clementines have now arrived but are best avoided for a little while longer.
SALAD
Iceberg Lettuce has now finished locally and we will soon be swapping over to Spanish, and we will experience slightly problematic with the change over in season, this will also effect the
Local Lollo Rosso and Oak Leaf will carry on for another week or so until we switch over to French, we have already switched the Lollo Bionda over to French.
All Baby Leaves are still selling very well for the time of year - both loose and pre-packed.
Baby Plum Vine and Cherry Vine Tomatoes are selling very well at the moment as is Freshly Cooked Beetroot. Chinese Leaf has also become more popular.
Tomatoes are due to rise in price as we change over form Dutch to Spanish.
Everything else on the Salad front has no real change.
EXOTICS
Mange Tout is due to rise slightly in price towards the end of the month, but it shouldn't be a huge increase.
Fresh Cranberries are now available.
We are back on Local Pac Choi; Isreali Dragon Fruit is excellent at the moment and Pine Nuts are a favourite for this time of year.
Chestnuts and Walnuts are now available in
Red Chicory still remains fairly difficult to get hold of, but it is available.
Dried Figs, Apricots and Argen Prunes are all stocked and now available.
We can also source truffle oil and tinned truffles which are very popular this time of year.
Portabello Mushrooms are very popular at the moment, also don't forget we also stock Peeled Garlic and Garlic Puree.
