MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 5th September, 2007 (24-Sep-07)
In the market this week both Brocolli and Cauliflower remain in short supply and high in price. The root crop is now more readily available e.g. Parsnips, Carrots and Swede, the Quality and price of these has steadied itself too. Local English Stick Beans are very good at the moment as is the new English Kale, and English Bobby Beans which have now become available to source. Primo and Savoy Cabbage are fairly short still and their prices remain high.
Cyprus Potatoes are coming to an end now; they will be replaced with new crop Ambo Potatoes (King Edwards). Onions have now leveled out in price and Spanish Onions are starting to fall. Marrows are now gradually fading away.
Chantennay Carrots are now showing better quality. Sprouts and Sprout Tops have started to make an appearance in market and are now available, but only in limited supply.
Both English Peas and English Rhubarb have finished, although we are currently in the process of sourcing another supply of Rhubarb.
Peaches and Nectarines are still very good, however Apricots have finally finished. Limes and Avocados are rising in price whereas
English Plums are coming to the end of there season but the President Plums we are currently using are superb. We have now switched to new crop Brazilian Honeydew and Watermelons and Galia Melons will be following shortly.
Bananas have risen in price, and all Berries remain high in price.
Cob Nuts have now started and we are expecting Wet Walnuts to follow shortly.
We are now on new season Conference Pears and we have also now seen the first of English Cox's Apples, but they are still fairly sharp.
We are still on Local Strawberries but they are coming to a close very shortly, when that happens we will be moving back on to Belgian.
All Salads are very stable in price and quality and the majority is still coming in locally. All Baby Leaves also seem to be very good at the moment.
Asparagus is still in very short supply and we have to pre-order it well in advance for the quantity's we use. It seems to be a general shortage over all sizes.
Mange Tout, Fine Beans and Sugar Snap Peas are all very stable in price and are good quality. Mixed Wild Mushrooms are also good quality at the moment. Loose Mixed Wild Mushroom availability is up on trumpette, girolles, cepes, and chanterelle but we would advise you to pre-order them to guarantee availability.
Affilia Cress, Rock Chives and other types are all good at the moment, and Smoked Garlic is now available.
Baby Queen Pineapples are higher priced than normal, this is due to a lack of availability, and Ginger is also going up in price.
