MARKET REPORT - Wednesday 23rd July, 2008
Vegetables
It’s all looking really good! With everything coming through looking really nice and prices are much better on most things.
However, there are a couple of items we are expecting to shoot up in price in the near future, one of which is Spanish Onions. This is due to the Chilean Onions ending and no large quantities of Spanish arriving yet.
We will also see a change over in medium Onions as we will soon be switching over to the new crop. They tend to have a very delicate skin and do not have a long shelf life.
Also White Cabbage will change to the new season by the end of the week. This does not normally keep half as long as the produce we are currently using and is also much more green in colour.
English Stick Beans are now gradually dropping in price and are very tender at this time of year.
Maris Piper Potatoes are now finished and have now been replaced by new crop Maris Bard. They will not have the same size we have become accustomed to, but they do chip and bake well.
Belgian and French Leeks are still very good and are still very tender.
English Peas and Broad Beans are exceptional and shouldn’t be forgotten.
English Bobby Beans are often over looked and really shouldn’t be forgotten as they have a lot of flavour.
Chantennay Carrots are now looking much better now the season is once again in full flow.
Salads:
Once again no real changes, everything is still coming through really nice with no real price hikes either that we can see.
Plum Vine Tomatoes along with Cherry Vine Tomatoes are very popular at the moment and readily available.
Ruby Chard, Bulls Blood and Mizuna are a popular choice this time of year and add something a little different to your salads.
Pousse is still suffering a little and still has a very short shelf life.
All Peppers are coming though very good and reasonably priced too.
Don’t forget we also sell freshly cooked and long life vac-packed Beetroot.
Sales have shot up with our Mixed Baby Leaf salad punnets, this seems to be a very popular choice.
Baby Plum Vine Tomatoes and Baby San Marzano Tomatoes are all readily available at this time of year.
Fruit:
Soft fruit is still readily available.
Peach and Nectarines of both the yellow and white fleshed variety’s are all available now.
Don’t forget we also sell English Blueberries fresh from Dorset.
Canteloupe and Charentais Melons are excellent at the moment along with the Galias. They are all now main crop produce and are full of flavour and colour.
All Apples are up in price as is usual for this time of year, especially the Red Apples.
Pink Grapefruit is very good and full of colour.
Large Pineapple price is due to rise shortly as there seems to be a general shortage of large fruit at the moment.
Both Lemons and Oranges remain much the same but the Lemons are now starting to come down a little in price.
Exotics:
Just a few things to mention this week, don’t forget we sell the following items:
Dried Apricots
Argen Prunes
Medjool Dates
Pine Nuts
Juniper Berries
Sun Blushed Tomatoes in oil
And Artichoke Hearts in oil.
Also Baby Aubergines and Courgettes and okra are all readily available.
